One of my favorite books on branding, The Brand Gap, has been made available as an online web presentation. It's awesome. Enjoy!
More books from Marty Neumeier:
Zag
The Designful Company
All of his books are designed to be read on a short plane ride. Inspiring stuff.

IIAI. The [ b ] School was founded on the philosophy for helping photographers elevate their game in the areas on Image, Images, Attitude and Infrastructure.
For years I have been telling you all about the importance of your "Image" as it relates to your photography business. Your Image and your Attitude are every bit as important as your Images when it comes to making yourself a success in this business.
My friends at Elevation and I have teamed up to help you with your Image*. I've been working with these guys for over a decade to help me with my promotional materials & marketing strategies and have every confidence that they can help you too.
For a select few of you, they are offering a special deal on their services. It's not for everyone... and yes, even with the discount, it's still super expensive, but I feel that if you are ready to truly make a name for yourself, this is a wiser investment than that fancy new camera you've had your eye on or any other piece of equipment you can buy. Invest in your brand. It's your most important asset. Click the banner below for details. |

| *You are paying Elevation for their service and I am just offering help, suggestions and feedback along the way. I am not being paid by Elevation for my involvement, I am just trying to promote them because of how much help they've given me throughout the years and I would love for you to have a similar experience. |

New Party of 5 dates announced for the first quarter of 2009:
January 13th
February 10th
March 10th.
Details here. It's very possible that these will be the only Party of 5's I do in 2009 as I have a full summer of weddings and lots going on with the [ b ] School. I will not be doing any formal workshops in Vegas during WPPI... just fun social events (details soon). Sign up now for a crash course in kicking ass! |

You really want to get to know me? Here's how:
Ron Dawson from Cinematic Studios came down a month or so ago and sat in my living room for a couple of hours and we had a really nice chat. Open, honest, candid... Barbara Walters style... except no tears were shed! The first of 4 parts is up on F-Stop Beyond
Future episodes will be posted in the coming weeks. |

| The Classroom is almost here. We are testing it this week and should be launching in next week. We want to make sure all is good before releasing it. We learned our lesson last month and won't rush anything again. I am pretty excited about what is to come! |

I am going to dedicate this post to my friend DJ, who reminded me how powerful a slideshow at the reception can be. You see, I used to run slideshows during the wedding reception back in 2002. We did them at just about every wedding for a couple of years. But then, it just seemed like a hassle, took too much time and effort away from shooting, and I kinda felt bad about shamelessly promoting myself when I should be capturing memories for my clients. I know this is a controversial issue, and it's completely up to you how to handle it... but during the Free to Succeed Tour, David was talking about emotion and connecting with clients. And that's what I do best... so I decided to start doing it again.
I did it at my 08-08-08 wedding and got rave reviews. I am certain I'll get at least 2 referrals out of it (one girl tried to hire me on the spot, but ala she didn't have a wedding date set or a boyfriend). At my last wedding on August 23rd, I did another slideshow and recorded it on the fly so you all can see how easy it is to do. Plus, I got some great feedback. This is the longest video I've posted so far, but it's 8 minutes well spent.
The sound is a little iffy because of the environment, and the end of the video quality isn't the best, but try to hang in there and see the point I am trying to make. Feel free to ask questions or discuss the video in the comments below and post a link to this where ever you feel it may be helpful for folks to view. |

A couple of notes:
*I shoot Small Jpegs and record them to the SD card on my Canon 1Ds Mark III.
*I use Photo Mechanic to tag the images.
*I put the show out at 9:30, a half hour before the reception was supposed to end. I set the computer on a piano, by the bar.
*We ended up staying an extra half hour or so because so many folks were watching the show on the way out.
*I ran out of business cards that night.
*Got an email from the bride the next day raving about the show.
*Yes, i did feel a little sneaky about recording people without them knowing. I did tell just about everyone I saw watching it that they may end up on my video. No one had a problem with it. I am a big believer in asking for forgiveness rather than permission. YMMV.
*I encourage you to try this at an upcoming wedding (minus the video capture).
ANSWERS TO SOME OF THE QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMENT SECTION:
*I shoot B&W in camera for about 25% of the shots. Back when I shot film, I had to decide between color & B&W, so I just do the same now. Saves time afterwards.
*I have a teeny tiny MacBook Air
*I shot the video with the same program I make all the [ b ] school blog videos with. I'ts called Screen Flow from varasoftware.com. It records the action on the screen, as well as the built in iSight on Macs.
*It's just the built in Mac Screen Saver. Just choose the "Collage" display style. It's the middle option. You have to have Leopard.
*No sharpening. Just the SOOC files. I showed every part of the process.
Thanks for all the wonderful comments! |

| Hey class, if you are an iPhone user, check out thebecker.com on your phone. It "magically" knows if you are browsing on an iPhone and will take you to a mini portfolio and contact page, instead of just being a blank page with a bunch of metadata. It comes in handy if you have a flash only website. It's only $50 and it just took a few minutes to set up. I think it's pretty slick and hopefully it'll appeal to my nerdy Mac lovin' clients! |

(In the interest of full disclosure, the maker of this site gave it to me to check out, and I told them I'd only blog about it if I liked it, and I do).
Go ahead and click the banner below if you'd like to order. |
